My wife and I went in March to see this show. I am a life long Monty Python fan and a Musical Theater afficionado, so this seemed right up my alley. However, my wife has never understood the absurdist humor that they Pythons bring to comedy. But she knew that I would enjoy this, so as a good trooper, off we went to the city.
My primary concern going in was that we were going to see Clay Aiken as Sir Robin. My pre-concieved notion of this was expecting his performance to be sub-par. After all, this was his first time on Broadway. However, I was unexpectedly please with his performance. He was of good voice and could actually act (in an absurd kind of way). The other performance that caught my attention was the woman playing the Lady of the Lake. First of all, the part as written is a great part. Secondly, she did a great job capturing her inner diva.
Overall, the show is thin on plot. However, it's meant to be an absurdist comedy about the middle ages and Broadway. It's meant to make you laugh. It's not Les Miz. It's bodily function humor and lots of it.
We walked out of the theater and my wife turned to me and said, "You know what, I wasn't expected to like the show, and I thought it was really good" So she walked away with a greater apprecation of the Pythons, and I walked away with a greater respect for Clay Aiken.
Lord help me!

Monty Python's Spamalot is so funny! I can't wait to see it again! My favorite number in Spamalot is "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life". It definitely deserved the 2005 Tony Award. I thank Mr. Idle for thinking up the musical.
