It Is Better than the Movie

    shiradaniel - June 17, 2008 11:04 AM PDT

I saw The Little Mermaid three times on Broadway and twice online the September 1 Denver performance. It was amazing. Sierra Boggess sounded just like the movie Ariel Jodi Benson. Ursula did not sound like the movie one, but I liked her personality better. She seemed less evil than the movie one. The rest of the cast was amazing. Some of the plot changes, such as the contest, were all right, but they were not my favorites. Instead of Ursula disgusing herself as Vanessa so she could stop Ariel and Eric's kiss and get Ariel herself, the show had a contest where Eric was suppose to pick the girl that rescued him. The rest of the plot changes were better than the movie. Flounder's costume needs a little work, but the rest of the costumes were just gorgerous. The show definitely improved since it moved to New York City. I loved it as much as my family. The Heelys were amazing. I also loved the special effects such as Ariel rescuing Eric during the storm, and Ariel being turned into a human by Ursula. I also liked the fact that the cast is racially diverse more than the movie. I cannot seem to understand why critics dislike this show. I think the critics are idiots because the show is still playing. Even celebrities, such as Emma Roberts and Victoria and David Beckham, saw the show in New York City. Ariel kills Ursula in the show, instead of Eric killing her in the movie. That is a better way to portray Ariel because it means that she really cares about her friends and her family. Eric's dog, Max, is not in the play, but that is all right. I think they should have made Ariel's grotto look bigger. It should have looked like a grotto instead of a cheap, small piece of scenery. I think they also should have included Eric's statue in the play, because when either Flotsam or Jetsam kicked Eric's statue head in the movie, that was the final straw for Ariel. That made her change her mind about becoming a human and giving her voice to Ursula. In the show, Ariel decided to run away from home with her best friend Flounder without any influence at first from Ursula's eels Flotsam and Jetsam. Scuttle was hysterical. He did not sound like the movie one, but that was okay. I wish his seagull friends in the show spoke as well as sang and dance. Unfortunately, the rest of the seagulls just sang and danced. They did not have any names either. They were only in the new songs written for the musical "Human Stuff" and "Positoovity." The new song were just as great as the old ones. They almost sounded like the late lyricist from the movie Howard Ashman actually writen them. My all-time favorite new song in the musical is "I Want The Good Times Back." It is a song sung by Ursula, Flotsam, Jetsam, and a company of eels. In the song, Ursula, Flotsam, Jetsam, and the rest of the eels sing about how Ursula has gotten banished for using black magic and being mean to everyone. Ursula would really like the kingdom back. She would even use Ariel as a pawn, just like in the movie, because she is so power hungry. Ursula, Flotsam, and Jetsam were so angry that they were celebrating the anniversary of Ursula's banishment. She swore she would get revenge on her brother King Trition eventually. She eventually got her revenge on her brother, but she died in the process of being mean. There is a second version of "I Want The Good Times Back" called "I Want The Good TImes Back Reprise." In the song, Ursula told Flotsam and Jetsam to block Ariel and Eric's kiss so she can keep Ariel and have King Triton's power and kingdom. Ursula wanted to keep her magic shell, which her father gave her, as well as her brother's trident, which his father gave him. Ursula and Trion's Dad is named Posseidon. He died before the musical began. In the show, Ursula's magical powers are supernatural, as Ariel pointed out during the show. That means that instead of Ursula's magic coming from her fingers, the source of the magical powers come from her magic shell. Ursula spies on people with her magic sheel, instead of with her magic bubble and Flotsam and Jetsam, like she did in the movie. Ursula put Ariel's voice in the magic shell, instead of in her seashell necklace, just like the movie. I hope I can see the show again. I liked the show better then other Disney shows and shows based on movies, such as The Wedding Singer, Hairspray, Aida, Beauty and The Beast, The Lion King, Tarzan, Mary Poppins, High School Musical, My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, and Dr. Seuss's How The Grinch Stole Christmas. The show did someting that the other shows and movies did not. The Little Mermaid movie and show took place in two worlds. The two world were under water and on land. Many of the characters went to both worlds during the movie and the show. That is what makes The Little Mermaid more unique than any other play, musical, movie, and television show ever made. That is also probably why it is my favorite movie, show, and soundtracks ever made in existance. The songs have different styles of music, such as doo-wop and ballads, which made the show unique as well. Usually shows and movies do not have many different styles of music. The humor was excellent in both the movie and the show. I loved the humor. The musical is a comedy and family show as well as a fantasy musical. The movie was also like that too. I recommend this show to anyone who loves and likes Disney, musicals, Broadway, humor, all kinds of music and movie styles and genres, someone who has children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and people who love the water and swimming sports, exercizes, and activites. Even if you do not like all that is mentioned above, I have a feeling you will love the show, just like me and many people who have read the orginal Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale, saw diffferent versions of this story, and saw this movie and show. Go under the sea and watch Th

    Another Good Little Mermaid Musical

    Vincent Y - August 21, 2008 7:01 AM PDT

There was another musical titled The Little Mermaid, its made by trumpets productions. You should listen to the soundtrack, the play is quite good and it can give the disney one a run for its money.

I saw the Little Mermaid's debut twice in Denver. An absolutely amazing show. It was so beautiful to watch and to hear. It just sucked me in from beginning to end. That magic Disney created still follows me.

    Fabulous!

    hammellmommy - June 07, 2008 8:36 PM PDT

We just took my 5 year old daughter to see Little Mermaid, and I was blown away! I have seen many shows, and this one by far is my favorite. The entire cast has spectacular chemistry, and the character development was superb! Really loved the use of Healy's, and the set is beautifully crafted.
The cast had powerful voices, but I think my favorite was Sebastian, a master of his craft. A must see for every little girl, and every one who once was a little girl!!!
(don't worry guys, you'll like it too!)

    Absolutely *Sparkling*!!

    mrs.cullen - June 07, 2008 8:38 PM PDT

the little mermaid is one of my lesser favorite disney movies. when i was younger i was really into it, but i grew tired of the songs, and of the storyline as well. then i heard they're making a broadway musical of it, but i resented the fact that they closed 'beauty and the beast'- my absolute favorite!- to replace it with this one. i checked it out anyway cause i know it'll be good, and also cause I was curious to see how they would show underwater motion and movement on stage.

i saw a matinee, and i was blown away! i knew it'd be good, but it was beyond good. it was fantastic! sierra boggess, who plays ariel, has to be the most amazing broadway actress i've seen, and man, can she sing!?!! when she sang 'part of your world', a song im really sick off, it was like i was hearing it for the first time. she was so charming, so talented, and so perfect for the role. after she sang that song, so early on in the show i became convinced that this was one of the best shows out there-even better than 'beauty and the beast' or any of the other musicals i've seen! the actress who played 'ursula' was also great, and i love the sets, especially when they did 'kiss the girl'. as for movement, and the 'flow' of motion, so to speak, i didnt know what to expect- maybe a lot of wires, like cirque de soleil or something, but i never wouldve thought it'd be something as simple as what they did use- shoes with wheels. its something you have to see for yourself to fully appreciate.

i highly recommend seeing the show, no matter how old you are, even if you're not a disney fan, or if you are, forget what you saw and heard in the movie. the broadway show is so much better! its most likely one of the best you'll ever see.

I just saw a preview performance of The Little Mermaid, and this show is going to be a massive hit!

The visuals are just stunning, and the music is so very rich and beautiful! It has all of those songs that you love from the film, and a number of new songs that fit right in.

The young woman who plays Ariel was born for the part... she totally captures the character and has just an amazing voice! All of the cast is first rate.

Get tickets while you can! This one is going to catch on like wildfire!
