When Oprah speaks, people listen. During a press conference this week Ms. Winfrey was asked if she had plans to make her hit musical The Color Purple into a movie. She said, "Actually, I am." Those three words had the film and...

San Diego is becoming the new breeding ground for Broadway musicals. The stage adaptation of John Waters' cult classic Cry-Baby begins previews tonight at the La Jolla Playhouse. The musical will open on November 18th and run until December 16th after which it will make the cross country journey to "The Broadway". Industry insiders will be watching the progress of Cry-Baby very closely. Many are beginning to whisper that Cry-Baby is the front runner for the Best Musical TONY this year. With Young Frankenstein not turning out to be the monster hit some predicted and with The Little Mermaid smelling a tiny bit fishy; some are thinking that Cry-Baby could be a sleeper hit and rush in a...

This an event. Two words. First word - four syllables. Someone famous is a....yes, celebrity. Second word. Sounds like - parades. No, not pomade. Yes. Charades. Put it together. Yes. Celebrity Charades. Wow. It might be hard to play charades, but it is harder to write as if you're playing charades. It doesn't quite work. Ok, the whole point here is that a bunch of really famous people are going to play charades - for a good cause. The LAByrinth Theater Company (the kewl NY theater troupe that was started by the even kewler Philip Seymour Hoffman) is hosting a benefit to raise money for the company. They have come up with a fun way to earn some dollars - Celebri...

First there was Fantasia. Now comes Lakisha. The Color Purple is starting to look like a reunion episode of American Idol. All we need now is for Simon Cowell to interrupt the proceedings in the middle of the Act I Finale and say "I'm just being honest..." The producers of the hit Broadway show The Color Purple (and you might remember that one of those producers is the Big O herself - Oprah!) announced some cast replacements yesterday. Among those joining the show will be Chaka Khan, BeBe Winans, and American Idol contestant Lakisha Jones. Lakisha will join on December 19th and the rest will come on board January 9th, 2008. I do have a bit of a beef about the American Idol thing...

"The Broadway" is not for the faint of heart. Yesterday the producers of Lone Star Love, the new musical inspired by The Merry Wives of Windsor and featuring Randy Quaid in his Bway debut, announced that the show would not be making it's way to NYC. The show is off, cancelled, proving that theater can be a cruel cruel "lover". Lone Star Love is currently finishing up its pre-Broadway try out in Seattle at the 5th Avenue Theatre, but the planned move to New York on November 1st will NOT take place. The move is shocking and unexpected. No one knows exactly what is going on, but there have been rumors surrounding the production. A recent article in the NY Post went to great length t...

Have you ever wondered how a musical is born? Did you imagine that The Sound of Music and Sweeney Todd made love and nine months later Wicked was born? Silly, that isn't how it works! The birth of a musical is a long, complicated,...
