Don't expect fancy linens, 12 piece orchestras or fancy ball gowns and tuxedos at this catered affair. The new musical, A Catered Affair, opened last night and it is a quiet, honest look into a small family struggling to make it in the Eisenhower er...

It is the Cinderella Story. A small (sometimes struggling) downtown theater produces a play or musical. Suddenly, the show is a big hit. Audiences are busting down the door, tickets sales skyrocket, and the spotlight is focused on this once under appreciated theater. Then the B'way producers arrive and ask, "How would you like to move this show to B'way." They say yes! Contracts are signed. The show opens on The Broadway, it is a HUGE hit and the little downtown theater is suddenly flush with money. The downtown theater then has a nice little revenue stream from its mega-hit B'way show and they can build a new theater (or renovate the existing one), advertise more, do bigger ...

The awards season is coming up quickly and we really haven't had a decent chat about where things stand for the Tony Nominations. Can we spend some time today prognosticating about the crop of shows and performers and where we think things stand as of today? Oh, don't you fret; I will do a more comprehensive "predictions" blog later on. Today, let's just have some fun "thinking out loud" about the races. As always, please feel free to jump into the discussion down below in that little comments box. BEST MUSICALThis is the grand daddy of them all - right? The Big Kahuna! Earlier this season it looked like a fierce battle was emerging for the title of "Best Muscial". The Rialto ...

I am currently fasting. Don't ask why? It is a long and convoluted answer that won't make any sense even after I explained it. The point is - I'm not eating and as I write this I am getting hungry. Really hungry. The "I could eat my laptop I am so hungry" type of hunger. Instead of eating electronic equipment I am going to try to fill myself up with the news from The Broadway. Let's see what we have to munch on today.... Tony Committee Talks EligibilityWhen it comes to Tony nominations nothing is simple. Before folks can actually nominate shows a committee has to make all sorts of decisions about who is or who is not eligible. This committee, "The Tony Awards Administrat...

I went to the theater with Kevin Bacon on Friday night. Oh, that is misleading - not the REAL Kevin Bacon - the other "Kevin Bacon". My friend received this moniker/code name because he seems to know EVERYONE (six degrees of Kevin Bacon - get it). Going to the theater with him is disorienting because so many people know him and he knows so many people. He has done a film with this person, lived next door to that person, did a play with another somebody. Really, my head was spinning. He knew so many people that I had to forgive him for the fact that 4 other people turned down the free ticket to the show before he invited me. I was FIFTH on the list, come on! I was insulted (no...

It was great fun. We had breakfast together (muffins, scones, etc.). We hung out in the morning and sang and laughed. We enjoyed the balmy spring weather of NYC together. We strolled through Times Square and shopped for theater mem...

It is official and officially exciting - Daniel Radcliffe (oh great wizard of Hogwarts and heartthrob of nearly a billion young girls - I don't think that is an exaggeration) will reprise his role in Peter Shaffer's revival of Equus on The Broadway. The London transfer will begin previews on September 5th at the Broadhurst Theater in New York. Equus will also star Tony and Olivier Award winner Richard Griffiths (many had worried that he may be too sick to reprise his role). The show is about a young boy who is charged with blinding six horses with a spike and the mystery behind the attacks, which followed a sexual encounter with a girl in the stable. It seems like there is something I ...

There is a game I like to play with my two nieces (shout out to Madison and McKenna); I like to call it "Would You Rather." It is simple; you say "would you rather..." and then pick two things for the person to chose between. It is best if it is really really hard to choose between the two things. With my nieces it usually goes like this. "Would you rather kiss a frog or a dog?" "Would you rather eat brussel sprouts or used gum?" "Would you rather lick a tree or the pavement?" Note: my nieces are somewhat oddly fixated on licking roads, sidewalks and the pavement - I am not sure what that is all about. Today at Yahoo! Broadway we are going to play our own version. Please fe...

Start with three girlfriends, send them on a trip to the city for a bachelorette party, mix in a lot of alcohol, stir things up with a hot guy and his friend who tap dances, put them on a set that shifts at frightening intervals and what do you have? A really great play by Adam Bock called Drunken City, currently playing at Playwrights Horizons on 42nd Street. Drunken City is about a trio of brides-to-be and an adventurous bar crawl that throws them all for a loop when one of the girls questions her choices after meeting an attractive new man. Sounds fun, right? Well it is! I saw Drunken City a few weeks ago and I have to agree with Joe Dziemianowicz of the NY Daily News who calls ...

When I woke up this morning I was thinking about that song by The Mamas and The Papas - "Monday, Monday". You know it, right? I started humming it to myself as I got out of bed. I was sort of bopping along to it and smiling. So I decided to look up the lyrics and make it part of my post today. Then I read the lyrics and it is a totally depressing song. Monday Monday, so good to me,Monday Monday, it was all I hoped it would beOh Monday morning, Monday morning couldn't guaranteeThat Monday evening you would still be here with me.Monday Monday, can't trust that day,Monday Monday, sometimes it just turns out that wayOh Monday morning, you gave me no warning of what was to beOh Mond...
