What is it like to step into the lead of a hit Broadway show weeks after the show has opened? How does it feel to be on The Broadway? Is Anika Noni Rose a total sweetheart? Those were some of the things I wanted to know when I had the opportunity to speak with the handsome, talented and charismatic Boris Kodjoe who is taking over the role of Brick in the hit B'way production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Take a look at what this exciting performer had to say... From Billboards to BroadwayYou will certainly recognize Mr. Kodjoe from his work as an actor and model. Perhaps you recognize him from his role on the hit television show Soul Food (for which he won an NAACP nomination for Ou...

Last night I attended two events in one evening. That's right - count 'em - two - two events in one night! That is NOT easy. I was in a quandary - there were two things I wanted to see and I refused to miss out on either. I really pulled off a "hat trick" (does that phrase really apply here - I don't know). So, while most of New York was home eating pasta, recovering from a crazy weekend and waiting for The Hills to come on; I was racing around Manhattan "theater hopping". So, instead of bringing you a report from one Monday night event - I bring you TWO! Welcome to Twofer Tuesday! Event Number One: How do you spell "amazing"? B. E. C. C. A. A. Y. ...

The Nominations for the Drama Desk Awards were announced this morning. I wanted to post them so you can take a look at the extensive list. The Drama Desks are interesting because they pull from both Broadway and Off-Broadway. I also want...

Do you know that old Mark Twain quote? "The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated." Well it might be changed around a bit: the reports of The Country Girl's death have been greatly exaggerated."After several weeks of bad Broadway buzz that ranged from Morgan Freeman not being able to memorize his lines to entire scenes being cut from the show (shocking for a revival of a 50 year old play); people were expecting a train wreck of a production. The new revival of Clifford Odets' classic play directed by Mike Nichols and starring Morgan Freeman, Frances McDormand and Peter Gallagher opened last night in a lovely and affecting new production. For all the crash gawkers - you ca...

The producers of the new musical Cry-Baby, which opened last night, may be crying in their cereal this morning as they read the reviews for their new show. I am sorry to report that the notices are not that good. Cry-Baby is based on the John...

Dear Readers: As you know, I work tirelessly to bring you the most important theatrical events happening on The Broadway. If it is serious, high-brow, classical and/or vital - I will report it to you. Today's post is one of the foremost...

Did you see it last night? I did! The top six contestants on American Idol sang songs by this week's Idol "Mentor" - Andrew Lloyd Webber. IMHO it was a bit of a train wreck. Let me elaborate... (If you have not seen the show yet - SPOILERS ahead!) AndySir Webber seemed a bit out of his element and rubbed me the wrong way in the beginning, but by the end of the night I was quite enjoying him. He was very kind to the contestants and seemed to be enjoying himself. I was kinda creeped out by the his riff on not being a hot 17 year old girl when David Cook sang to him, but whatever. The "1. open your eyes and 2. open your eyes" moment was also a little bizzaro. My question, wh...

On the heels of the Outer Critics Circle nominations come the nominees for the Drama League Awards. These awards are more limited; offering nominees in Best Musical, Play, Revival of a Musical and Revival of a Play. For the performers the Drama League simply selects a list of "distinguished performances" (which is pretty long). One person from the list will be presented with an award at the awards ceremony. This year's Drama League Awards ceremony will be held on May 16th and Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein will host the awards. Click HERE to learn more about the Drama League Awards and see below for the complete list of nominees. FYI: Hunter Bell from [title of show] presented ...

Let the award season begin! The first set of award nominations are out and there is already controversy and outrage (I love it). Yesterday the Outer Critics Circle announced their nominees and the show that picked up the most nominations (are you sitting down) is Young Frankenstein. Yup, that's right. The show that NO ONE is predicting to get a Tony Award has swept the first set of nominations. Now, before you go running around screaming that the sky is falling - let's put this in perspective. The Outer Critics Circle is the awards organization that handed Mary Poppins the most noms last year at this time and I think we remember how that turned out for the flying nanny - not so g...

I am really still a school boy at heart. It seems like only yesterday I was hanging out in the quad with my college chums, heading over to the library to do some cramming for a big test or swinging by the cafeteria to pick up some lunch. Maybe doing a pub crawl at night to let off some steam from a hard week of work. Ah, it seems like just yesterday! Ok, I made all that up - my college days were not really all that idyllic. I had a great time but it was more like I worked from dawn to dusk trying to do as much theater as I possibly could. I didn't know where the "quad" was and I was never on the college meal plan. I lived in the theater building (literally, I think I slept in t...
