Reminder to self; don't take the red-eye from California to New York. Ugh. I flew in to the City today and arrived at 5:30am. What was I thinking? Crammed into a middle seat in coach I slept most of the trip but it was that uncomfortable "my neck is totally crooked and my legs are squished into a 3 inch space that is being shared with my dog who is stuffed into a neon green bag" feeling. But I am here. Back in NYC; I may be groggy and unfocused, but I am back! And I a few bits of news for you.
The 2007 theater year will come to a close tonight, December 28, 2007, when the Classic Stage Company begins previews of their new production of New Jerusalem. This new play is written by David Ives (currently represented on Broadway as the script doctor for Mark Twain's Is He Dead?) and directed by Walter Bobbie. New Jerusalem is about the philosopher Baruch de Spinoza and stars Richard Easton, Fyvush Finkel, David Garrison and Jenn Harris.
Now that 2007 is over, it is time to look ahead to 2008. It is going to be a jam-packed season. Here is what is directly on the horizon.

Feb 28- Passing Strange
March 6- Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
March 9- In the Heights
March 27- Gypsy

Wow. Looking good, right? And I am sure there will be more shows announced in the coming month! Goodbye 2007. Hello 2008!
Let's look back at 2007 just a little bit longer. You know I love some top ten lists. A few more have come out. Time Out New York Magazine theater critics David Cote, Adam Feldman and Helen Shaw have picked their best and worst for 2007 and the lists are interesting. Click HERE to check them out. I particularly liked that 1001 by Jason Grote made their lists and that Shaw singled out Particularly in the Heartland (a show that I very much enjoyed but neglected to include in my year end wrap up). The best line of the article goes to Adam Feldman who picks Grease as one of the worst of the year and says, "Grease is the turd". Ha Ha Ha. Very funny stuff Adam!
USA Today also weighed in with their Best and Worst list from Elysa Gardner. Click HERE to read her picks. I thought it was an interesting list but I definitely do not agree with her choice of LoveMusik as "Best Musical". I did NOT enjoy this production. I love a little Donna Murphy, but the show was a snoozer! Sorry Elysa, but I respectfully disagree.
On a sad note; choreographer/director and actor Michael Kidd has passed away. Mr.Kidd was a five time Tony Award winner and was responsible for choreographing such legendary B'way shows as Li'l Abner, Guys and Dolls, and Finian's Rainbow. He was 92 years old.
Michael Riedel in the NY Post looks back at all the theatrical legends that were lost in 2007. It is a wonderful article. Click HERE to read this lovely piece.
To end on a lighter note. Click HERE to check out an article on MTV's website that discusses the possible sequels for Sweeney Todd. Apparently the younger members of the cast are trying to line up their next gigs and have envisioned several possible horror flick type sequels for Sondheim's musical. But don't laugh too hard. If Hollywood can release Alien vs. Predator, they can certainly create Sweeney 2: Revenge of the Barber. Maybe I should go back to bed.
