Tonight, December 19th, LaKisha Jones the powerhouse singer and American Idol top 4 finalist will make her debut on "the Broadway" in The Color Purple. Ms. Jones will step into the role of the Church Soloist and serve as the cover for the part of Sofia.
LaKisha is the second American Idol vet to join the production. Fantasia Barrino (who won the A.I. competition) has been winning favorable notices in the show for some time now (even if her attendance is somewhat spotty). You haven't heard about this? Oh, well, apparently Fantasia has missed nearly 50 performances since she took over for LaChanze in The Color Purple. There have been big brouhahas about it (I have NO idea if that is how you spell brouhaha, but we are going with that). Fantasia is new to the rigors of Broadway and many speculate that it is just too daunting for her. She has been sick often and has needed to miss shows. If there is one thing that theater fans do NOT like, it is getting to the theater and finding out that the star is "out" for the show. It makes them ANGRY! Ok - back to the news of the moment...LaKisha.
I was really routing for LaKisha on A.I. and I think her arrival on B'way is a good thing. She has an amazing voice and I can see her landing many more roles on the rialto.
