Daniel Day-Lewis / WireImage
Just when you thought there was nothing left that Dan Day-Lewis hadn't done - he just might go and prove us wrong. He played a man who only had the use of his left foot and learned to paint and write with his toes (and picked up an Academy Award). He transformed into Billy "The Butcher" in 1860 New York City (and picked up another nomination). He took on the role of a man falsely accused of an IRA bombing (another nomination). He disappeared into the part of a turn-of-the-century oil prospector (and drummed up another gold statue for his mantle). Now, Daniel Day-Lewis wants us all to know he can sing and dance, too!
Variety has reported that Day-Lewis is in talks to take on the role of Guido Contini in the new adaptation of the Broadway musical Nine. The role was to have been played by Javier Bardem (Academy Award winner for No Country for Old Men). Bardem dropped the project a few months ago saying that he was exhausted and needed a break before beginning another film. The movie is being directed by Rob Marshall (who spearheaded the musical Chicago to film history and Academy glory). If Day-Lewis signs on the dotted line he will join Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard (oh - another Academy Award winner this year!), Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman (I think you know who she is) and Judi Dench (that's Dame Judi Dench). What a cast! My gosh!
Day-Lewis never seems to play the same part twice. He is known for taking on challenging and varied roles (he is also known for disappearing into the part he is playing - sort of in a scary way - but we won't go into that). Nine would cast Day-Lewis as a famous film director who experiences personal and creative crisis while trying to juggle all the women in his life. The original stage musical was inspired by the Fredrico Fellini film 8½; Michael Tolkin did the adapting work on the screenplay, and Anthony Minghella actually penned a rewrite before he passed away. Marshall is expected to go into production for the film in September. Harvey Weinstein of The Weinstein Company is producing. If Day-Lewis accepts the role it will be the continuation of a relationship that began when Weinstein distributed My Left Foot back in 1989 (which, as mentioned before, snagged Day-Lewis his very first Best Actor Oscar).
The addition of Day-Lewis to the cast of this film would send buzz-o-meters off the charts. There's already been a great deal of excitement around this project, but with Daniel Day-Lewis in the lead role the anticipation would be amazing! I myself could not wait to see him tackle this role. I feel like it would be a whole different Day-Lewis; one we have not seen in any other film. I imagine that is one of the reasons he might be drawn to the project.
The Variety article is quick to note that a spokesman for The Weinstein Company denied that a lead had been set for the film. The article quoted the spokesman saying, "any of the names being thrown around is pure conjecture, and when we're ready to make an announcement, we'll let you know."
I am trying to call his wife (Rebecca Miller, daughter of Arthur Miller) to see if she knows anything. Right! Like I know Rebecca Miller. Actually I sat next to her at the Roundabout production of A View from a Bridge (many years ago) and we became fast friends. Well, that is if you define "fast friends" as two people who don't know each other at all. Enough of that. I will let you know when this deal is done.

You lose points for not crediting the fabulous composer!
But if the cast list you quoted is even half right I am now dying to see this movie!
I cannot believe that cast!
crazy! I have a love/hate thang for D.D.L.---and yes, the buzz-o-meters would be fried!
I can't help but to want to see where D.D.L. would take this...
thx Bix!
Dear lord - DDL is like that kid in your theater class that always gets the good stuff - you know he's got the chops but you're sick of looking at his mug. God bless him, but I'd like to see Antonio Banderas step it up! C'mon Tony, stretch!
OH MY, I feel the same way about DDL. Great guy, ok we get it, you are TALENTED! No he will be amazing I am just gonna guess. Lemme guess, ANOTHER thousand nominations for him...Seriously, that guy is crazy talented.
I finally saw "There Will be Blood" and thought it was one of the most boring movies I've ever sat through. Where it was going was anyone's guess. DDL was good, but the movie was a drag.
I have always been trying to ask everthing about him as I could.
People say he is a member of a celeb club
