The Cast of Spring Awakening / WireImage
Has the Stagehands' strike got you feeling sad? Depressed? Angry? Agitated? Are you aching for some theater, but you've already seen everything Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway (I don't believe you)? Are you wishing you had a way to see some big glitzy musical numbers and hear some big belted ballads? Sounds like you've got the "Broadway Strike Blues"!
Well there is a cure for what ails you; it's called YOUTUBE.
As a little pick-me-up and a diversion from this nasty and never ending strike - I have put together several of my favorite clips from YouTube. They run the gamut from some classic moments to some bizarre new things you might not have ever stumbled across before.
I hope you enjoy. If you have any favorites that you would like to share with the group please leave a link for us in the comments section.
Happy Clicking!
Ellen: The Musical
Here is a clip of the Ellen show when she decided to do an all singing version of her talk show. Kristin Chenoweth makes an appearance. I heart the lyrics "sing from your hoo hoo". It seems as if Jack Black helped with the songs.
Carrie: The Flop
You have, of course, heard of the legendary B'way flop, Carrie: The Musical. Directed by Debbie "Fame" Allen and starring Betty Buckley the show only ran for, like, 2 performances, but you can see a little bit here. You know, I have actually heard a demo of several of the songs and it is pretty good. I would love to see someone revive this show Off-Broadway.
Jonesing for SA
Are you having Spring Awakening withdrawals? Well, here are a couple of numbers that the SA gang did a capella on the picket line. I think that this is one of the sweetest things I have seen in a long time, especially JJG playing the ukulele.

Now for Something Odd
Check out Jeff Whitty, author of Avenue Q, doing some sort of Katherine Hepburn "rap" for a high school talent show in 1986 (according to the blurb on YouTube). This is HI-sterical.

This is High School?
I don't know about you, but when I was in high school and we did a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat we wore our own clothes and made a pyramid out of poster board. Take a look at these high school productions with ultra fancy production values...um, Les Miz? What is that all about!?

CLICK HERE to check out a high school version of Cats (wow)
CLICK HERE to check out a high school version of Lion King (ok, maybe this was too ambitious)
It Shouldn't Be Funny...
But it is! I know it is a cheap laugh, but I think it is funny to watch a B'way musical being performed in a different language. Call me juvenile (I heard that!) but it is FUNNY!

Lea Salonga's Audition
This video of Lea Salonga's audition for Miss Saigon is Ahh-Mazing. She looks so young (I think she is 18) and she sounds so BRILLIANT. I don't care if it is not a real audition - it is still crazy wonderful! I also love seeing the whole creative team - Nic Hytner et al. looking crazy young, too. You have to watch this one!

Leslie Kritzer Rocks
You may not know Leslie Kritzer, YET, but you will know her soon. She had a featured role in Legally Blonde and is about to make some waves in the new musical A Catered Affair. She got great reviews in the out of town try outs in San Diego. Here she is at NY's Joe's Pub singing Patti LuPone's club act word for word. She sings the song Superman.

You may have already seen this, but I had to include it. The legendary TONY performance of Jennifer Holiday singing her signature song from the B'way musical Dreamgirls. Enjoy!
