Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
My post is a little late today because I slept in and then had to engage in one of my favorite Thanksgiving Day traditions - The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I love to watch the balloons, floats and bands. I think it is fun checking out Matt and Meredith and Al and listen to them read clumsy "copy". Most of all I like to watch (you guessed it) the shows from "The Broadway" that are featured on the parade during the first hour. This year the following shows were featured; Legally Blonde, Mary Poppins, Young Frankenstein and Xanadu. They all did "The Broadway" proud this year. The Matthew Bourne choreography for Mary Poppins was a real hit and (as much as I am a naysayer about YF) the folks from Young Frankenstein kinda dazzled everyone with a fun number from the show. Sutton Foster looked particularly good and I am not sure how Roger Bart gets his hair so BIG! It was a bit weird to see the gang from Legally Blonde wearing L.B. t-shirts and jogging suits (they were not allowed to wear their actual costumes because of the Local One Stagehands Strike). I have yet to see Xanadu but Kerry Butler was sweet and funny on roller skates and Cheyenne (hubba hubba) Jackson looked handsome but cold in his short-shorts. Broadway also got a shout out from Meredith and Matt when they referenced the Broadway labor dispute and sent their hopes for a speedy resolution to the situation. I thought it was really nice that they mentioned that! P.S. the Rockettes rocked the parade with their high kicking. I [heart] those Rockettes!
Just In: As I am typing this Jonathan Groff and Lea Michelle from Spring Awakening are singing a "pop version" of Give My Regards to Broadway on the M&M float. They are soooo cute! The song - well - it is Thanksgiving, I will be nice! How is that for "real time" reportage.
For the 13th day of the strike and Thanksgiving, I think we should all take a day off from this whole mess. It looks like The Grinch will be opening back up very soon (we still await the final decision following Jujamcyn's counter action). There are continued hopes for more negotiations between the Union and Producers on Sunday (this hasn't been confirmed yet). As things move towards the courts - it appears that The Neaderlanders are suing the union to have their shows opened (they believe they are being punished as the result of a "secondary unlawful boycott") we might see more shows open sooner than later.
So - let's all have some turkey and stuffing, watch some football (well, not me!) or Legally Blonde on MTV (ok, maybe me!) and think good thoughts about a swift end to the strike and hope that the neon lights of Broadway will soon be blazing bright again (sometimes holiday wishes do come true).
On behalf of everyone here at Yahoo! Broadway - I wish you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving!
