This summer's biggest controversy is back!  This past summer the message boards and chat rooms were on fire with one subject - Patti Lupone. City Center Encores! Summer Stars presented a production of the much loved musical Gypsy starring Bway diva extraordinaire Patti Lupone directed by the author himself, Arthur Laurents. Critics and audiences wildly disagreed on the merits of this production. In one corner we had the enthusiasts who were jumping to their feet in the middle of songs (yup, that actually happened) and in the other corner we had the folks that believed Lupone and Mamma Rose were a mismatch and the production as a whole lacked a major spark. If you happened to troll t...

Tonight Kristin Chenoweth (um, from Wicked, duh) is part of the cast of the new ABC tv series Pushing Daisies. The show about a man who can bring people back to life with one touch also stars such former NYC stage stars as; Swoosie Kurtz, Lee Pace, Anna Friel and Ellen Greene. Pushing Daisies has been getting great advance buzz and received a rave review in the NY Times today.  If you have been craving some Chenoweth check out this new show, tonight! Check your local listings for more details (I have always wanted to write that - I don't know why!?!) ~See You On The Aisle...

Can we start with something off topic today. Did anyone think that my picture and Bob Saget's picture looked similar? Discuss. Ok, now on to today's business - the reviews for A Catered Affair... Many Broadway musicals have what is called a "pre-Broadway run" or an "out of town try-out".  They typically go to cities such as Seattle, Chicago, Boston, Denver and San Diego.  This gives the creative team time to work on the show far from the judgemental eyes of New Yorkers who have been known to kill a show with bad word of mouth.  That being said, these shows do have official openings and the local press does come and review the productions.  These reviews are often very impo...

While we were having dinner last night the producers of The Drowsy Chaperone announced that Bob Saget (you know - "Full House" and "America's Funniest Home Videos") will be taking over the role of The Man in the Chair in the Bway production of the show. Mr. Saget will join the show October 19th (yikes, that is soon!).In other news the Olsen twins have signed on to play Simba and Mufasa in The Lion King. Get out your acid wash jeans and leg warmers - Duran Duran is coming to Broadway. The boys of Duran Duran ( Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor and Roger Taylor) are going to be rockin' and rollin' at the Barrymore Theatre from November 1st - November 12th  for nine performances.  This live stage show/presentation precedes the release of their new album Red Carpet Massacre which comes out on November 13th. It sounds like the show is going to be fantastic and unique. The press release had this to say: [The show] "will take audiences in this historic thousand-capacity venue on a musical journey, presenting their new record in its entirety, as well as classics such as ‘Rio', â€...

I ran across this quote today from Bono. He is totally psyched about the Spider-Man musical he is working on with Julie Taymor (which I told you about last week). Here is the quote from IMD  [Bono] says, "If we pull off what we're trying, it will be something the likes of which no-one has seen or heard. It should be a hallucinogenic experience for theatergoers. You have the visual energy she (Taymor) brings. The myth of the arachnid and the elasticity of these characters - you can turn theatre upside down." And Bono and The Edge plan to bring a wide range of music to the production. Bono adds, "We've got some punk rock in there and some beautiful opera."  Click HERE to see the full a...

It is official Gone with the Wind will now come to life on the stages of London's West End!  I am not sure I can wrap my mind around it.  What will the songs be like?  Love songs between Rhett and Scarlett? A big number for Prissy:      I told you no.     You didn't hear any maybes.     I'll tell you again.     I don't know nothing about birthin' no babies. Whatever it may be, it is now OFFICIAL. The dates have been announced and the production will begin previews on April 5th, 2008 and open on April 22nd at the New London Theatre. Taking the helm will be director Trevor Nunn.  The music and lyrics are being written by Margaret Martin based on, of ...

Happy Monday everyone! I don't know about you but I could use another day of the weekend. I am not ready for Monday. Do you think there is a way for Congress to pass a bill adding another day to the weekend?  If one of the presidential candidates ran with that campaign promise, they would totally win. Ok, enough of that - let's get to the Dark Day Dish. My weekend really started on Wednesday when I began my 5 day 5 show marathon. Yikes. That is a lot of theater! Let me give you the highlights. Wednesday/Thursday (Pre-Weekend):  I saw two Off Broadway plays. First, Where is Steve Steven? a new play by Ann Marie Healy, directed by Annie Kaufman and presented by a group cal...
