  1. Dark Day Dish: Monday Morning Blues

    October 22, 2007 5:15:29 AM PDT

(L to R) Boyd Gaines, Claire Danes and Jefferson Mays/WireImage

"I don't like Mondays.  Tell me why.  I don't like Mondays.  Tell me why." Does anyone remember that song by Boomtown Rats, written by Bob Geldof?  It aptly describes how I am feeling this morning.  The temperature has dipped and this a.m. I just wanted to stay in bed under the covers and wait it out until Friday rolled around again.  Alas, there are blogs to be written, shows to be seen, gossip to be heard and while it might be tough to get going today, it is nice to reflect back on an excellent weekend and dish with you all just a bit.  So without further adieu, here is today's Dark Day Dish...Horrifying Friday NightThis time of year the film studios begin releasing all their Oscar ...

  2. Danes' Dazzling Debut - The Red Carpet Review

    October 18, 2007 7:22:47 PM PDT

This is how it works here at TOTA (Two On The Aisle).  Everywhere I go - YOU go!  Tonight I got to sample my first Broadway Red Carpet and it was a ton of fun.  The only thing missing was you, so let me bring you up to date with all the details. The occasion was the opening of the Bway play Pygmalion, starring none other than hot young super celeb Claire Danes (I love Claire Danes from the old days when she shot to stardom on the television show My So Called Life!).  This wasn't any ordinary opening night; this was Ms. Danes' Broadway debut.  I wonder if she had butterflies.  Speaking of butterflies - the show's logo has a butterfly in it because the play is about the transformation of...

  3. Chris Rock Will Not Sleep

    October 18, 2007 4:41:42 AM PDT

    Chris Rock / WireImage

Neither will Margaret Cho, Billy Crudup, Rosie Perez, Lili Taylor and Marlo Thomas.  None of these actors will be getting a wink of sleep on October 22nd because they are going to have to perform a show that has been written, rehearsed and performed in one day - in 24 hours.  This is an annual event in NYC called (what else) The 24 Hour Plays on Broadway.  Started in 1995 on the Lower East Side this "happening" has hosted 100+ writers, 1,000+ actors and more than three hundred plays.  The event has been produced in New York, London, Los Angeles and Chicago.  This is crazy time folks, but the results are odd, interesting, exciting, funny, and remarkable.  I attended one year and saw a p...

  4. Pink Is The New Hit

Data was released today on the MTV broadcast of the hit Bway show Legally Blonde.  Variety reported that "MTV was pleased with the debut of Legally Blonde: The Musical, as Saturday's afternoon preem averaged 1.27 million viewers and drew more persons 12-34 than any other program in its timeslot."  FYI, "preem" is Variety-speak for "premiere".  You probably figured that out right away and it took me several seconds.  The stats released indicate that L.B. was seen by a total of 12.5 million people (combined).  If you missed it you can see the show when MTV re-broadcasts it on October 19th at 11:00am EST.  Check your local listings for more details and go Blonde! ~ See You On The Aisle (...

  5. OT: Can We Talk About Ellen?

    October 18, 2007 4:39:06 AM PDT

    Ellen DeGeneres / WireImage

I know this is a Broadway Blog, but occasionally I am going to have to voice my opinions on something and go OT (off topic).  Have you seen THIS?   Ellen DeGeneres sobbing on national television.  You probably know the details; she adopted the dog (Iggy), she gave the dog to her hairdresser's family and then the agency took the dog back.  The agency (Mutts and Moms) has a very strict policy about giving dogs to other people after you have adopted it.  They also have a policy about not adopting to families with children under 14 years old.All of this makes me so angry.  I understand that there are rules and they are there to protect the animals.  I get that, but if the dog has a good ...

  6. The Graduate Graduates To Directing

    October 18, 2007 4:37:04 AM PDT

    Kathleen Turner / WireImage

Kathleen Turner, last seen on Broadway naked in The Graduate, will be coming back to NYC.  This time she will be directing.  Roundabout Theatre Company has just announced that they are going to present Crimes of the Heart directed by Kathleen herself.  This Pulitzer Prize play by Beth Henley follows the lives of three southerly sisters (Lenny, Meg and Babe) as they reunite on the occasion of the youngest sister shooting her abusive husband.  The play is set in Mississippi and is darkly funny and touching.  The original Broadway production (1981) featured a newcomer by the name of Peter MacNicol who later went on to star in the film Sophie's Choice (with Meryl Streep) and Ally McBeal.  ...

  7. Nonverbal Gossip

Sometimes you can learn things by what people don't say!  Last night I was out with some NY theater "insiders".  On our walk to the theater to see Feurzabruta I started digging for some information.  I wanted to see if I could get some "dish" for all of you Two On The Aisle readers.  I casually mentioned that I had heard some info on the Gypsy revival and how Laura Benanti's manager was saying she was "unavailable" for any projects this spring.  Pause here whilst I give credit to Moxie The Maven  at www.moxiethemaven.com  - she reported this tidbit a week ago.  I know Moxie and she is uber-reliable, but I needed a bit more info.  Continuing with last night's story.  I mentioned th...

  9. Aiken-Alot? Spam-A-Aiken? Clay-Maiken-Alot?

    October 16, 2007 9:32:51 AM PDT

    Clay Aiken / WireImage

Breaking News.  Clay Aiken is going to make his Broadway debut in Spamalot!  Yup, that is right folks.  Clay Aiken, American Idol star, will be rockin' "the Broadway" from January 18th - May 4th, 2008.  Wow!  Wow!  Wow!  I don't even know where to begin.  I am speechless.  I guess I will let others do the talking for me.  (These are quotes from the press release.)Director Mike Nichols said: "Clay Aiken is amazing beyond that glorious voice.  Turns out he is an excellent comic actor and a master of character.  People will be surprised by his wide ranging talent, since the first impression is of great country charm and a singer to remember.  This guy is not only a star, he is a lo...

  10. Will God Put A Spell On Groff?

    October 16, 2007 4:10:09 AM PDT

    Jonathan Groff / WireImage

I can't sing.  No, really, I can't sing.  Many people have confirmed this for me.  This, however, did not stop me from taking a lead role in a community theatre production of Godspell in St. Petersburg, FL.  I played the role of Judas and sang the opening notes of the show as well as the song "Its All for the Best" (with a lovely tap dance that accompanied it).  I was spectacular.  Spectacularly bad!  Like all tone deaf souls - I had NO IDEA and I thought I was brilliant.  I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the musical Godspell, which is why I am so excited about the announcement that it is coming to "the Broadway"Producers announced yesterday that Stephen Schwart'z music...
