When I woke up this morning I was thinking about that song by The Mamas and The Papas - "Monday, Monday".  You know it, right?  I started humming it to myself as I got out of bed.  I was sort of bopping along to it and smiling.  So I decided to look up the lyrics and make it part of my post today.  Then I read the lyrics and it is a totally depressing song.

Monday Monday, so good to me,
Monday Monday, it was all I hoped it would be
Oh Monday morning, Monday morning couldn't guarantee
That Monday evening you would still be here with me.

Monday Monday, can't trust that day,
Monday Monday, sometimes it just turns out that way
Oh Monday morning, you gave me no warning of what was to be
Oh Monday Monday, how you could leave and not take me.

What a bummer, right?  I just love how I thought it was this upbeat little diddy that I was "whistlin' while I worked" and it turned out to be a real downer.  Do you think that is an omen for the day?  Some "sign" of what is to be?  Some premonition that everything good will turn BAD?  I guess I won't know until the day happens.  Well, let's start with the news and gossip for the day - we'll see how that goes.  One step at a time today, folks, one step at a time....

More Stars Counting to NINE

Word is that Nicole Kidman and Dame Judi Dench are thinking about signing on to the new film version of the hit B'way musical Nine that is being directed by Rob Marshall (director of the hit movie adaptation of Chicago).  Kidman and Dench would join the ranks of the starry cast that already includes:   This year's Academy Award winners Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) and Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose), as well as, Penelope Cruz and Sophia Loren.  The movie was halted by the Writer's Strike back in the fall but seems to be on track for a September start date.  Given the theme of today, it is likely that none of this will happen.  "Monday Monday, can't trust that day."

Get Your Sondheim On

Wow.  There is a big big event going on tonight at 7:00pm.  It is called The Ladies Who Sing Sondheim and WOW are there some ladies comin' to sing.  The show is just what it says it is - some ladies singing Stephen Sondheim songs.  It is songbook concert conceived and directed by Tony Award winner John Doyle to benefit The Acting Company.  The ladies are IMPRESSIVE; Jenna Russell (currently playing Dot in Broadway's Sunday in the Park with George), Debra Monk (currently of Curtains), Laura Benanti (currently in Gypsy), and (drum roll please) the grande dame of the theater herself - Angela Lansbury.  It was hoped that Patti LuPone (Sondheim interpreter extraordinaire) would also be able to attend, but she will not make it due to illness.  This looks like an Ah-mazing night.  That being said, it probably will be cancelled thanks to the hex I have put on the day, "Monday Monday, sometimes it just turns out that way." (oh, I just made a little rhyme - day/way).

A Legend Lives On - In Song!

Now you may all choose to disagree with me on this one, but I think this is an EXCELLENT idea...Richard Thomas (not John Boy from The Waltons) the man who brought us Jerry Springer - The Opera, is currently at work on a new opera whose subject is Anna Nicole Smith.  I mean, it is perfect (don't you think?) the drama, the characters, the mystery...the camp!  Why didn't I think of this?  Thomas is writing the libretto and Mark-Anthony Turnage is working on the score.  A production is planned for the Royal Opera House in London.  I can't wait!  Oh, but with my luck today this will probably never happen.  Great.   "Oh Monday morning, you gave me no warning of what was to be."

Jon and Michele - Together Again

Lea Michele of The Broadway's Spring Awakening will be performing her cabaret act Once Upon a Dream at Feinstein's at Loews Regency Hotel tonight.  Joining her for the show will be her co-star (and rumored off stage co-star, as well) Jonathan Groff.  It should be a lovely evening; Fienstein's is a glorious room and Michele has a lovely voice.  To make a reservation call (212) 339-4095.  I won't be seeing it - I can't risk the disappointment if it is cancelled at the last minute.  "Monday Monday, can't trust that day."

Ok, that's it.  I have got to shake this attitude.  I can't spend the rest of the day in this state of anxious depression.  I am gonna wash this Monday song right out of my hair.  I need a new song.  Ok.  How about - I Don't Like Mondays.  No.  How about - Just Another Manic Monday?  No.  That's not right either.  What about - Black Monday?  Oh, I give up.  I am going back to bed.  Good night.
