Katie Holmes & Tom Cruise / WireImage
Haven't we heard this before? Indie actress marries Tom Cruise. Beautiful actress rumored to have signed contract as part of arrangement in marrying Tom Cruise (I said "rumored", calm down). The new Mrs. Cruise chooses film roles carefully (with help of hubby - question mark). Aforementioned actress/wife takes on high profile legit theater role to jump start legit movie career and makes a big splash. Oh, yes - we have heard this before. Can you say "Nicole Kidman in The Blue Room"? Well it is déjà vu time. The rumor is that Katie Holmes is set to make her Broadway debut, following in the well-tread footsteps of Mr. Tom Cruise's previous wife. What will the results be for her?
The word on 42nd Street is that Katie Holmes has been offered a leading role in the Broadway revival of Arthur Miller's classic play All My Sons. I understand that this is definitely more than a rumor, that she has been mulling the offer very seriously for several weeks now and is prepared to accept any day. The new production would join Holmes with John Lithgow (The World According to Garp) and Dianne Wiest (currently starring in CSC's The Seagull).
Set in 1947, the play tells the story of a family torn apart when a son discovers that his father sold defective parts to the military for airplanes, which caused the planes to crash and kill 21 pilots. Katie Holmes is set to play the role of Ann Deever, the young bride of the son and the daughter of the business partner that took the blame and landed him in jail. British director Simon McBurney will helm the project.
IMHO (in my humble opinion) I think Ms. Holmes will do a great job. Maybe I am eternal optimist (or maybe I am scared of the wrath of Tom Cruise), but I think she has "chops" - I think she can act. I am a fan of hers from movies and film and would really like to see her succeed here. It is risky for her to jump straight to The Broadway (her last stage role was reportedly in high school). It might have been smarter for her to start in London and transfer (like Kidman did with The Blue Room). However, she is well suited for the role, she has a rockin' cast to work with and a very strong director. It is a smart choice for her and she may do very well here.
I do worry that the rialto will become a big CIRCUS. Can you imagine the "paps" camping out in Shubert Alley trying to get a pix of Holmes and baby Suri? The reporters skulking around the stage door for a word with Cruise. The crowds gathered around the entrance to the Church of Scientology building on 45th Street awaiting the arrival of Family Cruise (did you think I was going to do this post without one scientology reference - come on). I worry about all that, but I think it is a side show that we can put up with because this will bring a TON of exposure to The Broadway - which is always great.
SIDE NOTE: I actually played the role of George Deever (the young angry brother of Ann who exposes the deadly family secret) in a college production of All My Sons. I was nothing short of riveting. Ms. Holmes, if you are reading this, I may be willing to come out of retirement to reprise my role. I'm just saying....
We will keep you posted with the updates on this story and if it happens, most likely, blog about it incessantly! Until then, I will...

Also, ANYTHING with the incomparable John Lithgow will be fantastic! I think he is awesome.
Blackdotnose, please know that about 75% of what I say is total bs or said for a laugh, in life and on blog. And don't be leary of anything with the Comments Crew on your side, we have been known to end hate and intolerance of one another. Who do you think took down the Berlin Wall??(see, that is me.)
I don't mean to say why would Katie Holmes do it, but literally, how do you do it. I read an article about Megan Mulally(sp) and Young Frankenstein. She said her hours were so depressing, being up all hours from adrenaline of doing the show and sleeping til 3 or 4:00 pm. How do you do that with a toddler? Hats off to anyone that can handle that schedule AND a tot.
hmm don't you have to know how to act to be in Broadway??
Keep thinking this, if she weren't Mrs. Cruise, would she be getting this role on her own? Decent actress, yes, but has she earned this on her own like so many on The Broadway do? Just a thought...
Katie Holmes cannot act. At all. She did the same lame head tilting whine the entire time she was on Dawson's Creek. And even the previews for her last movie were cringe-worthy. Even before Broadway, Nicole Kidman had done outstanding film work with Dead Calm and To Die For - so the comparison between the two women is like prunes to apples (Katie not being the apple). Katie drank the Kool Aid and should enjoy her new life in the Cruise compound and spare us more attempts at a film career. Then again, she may be sufficiently talented for a Hallmark movie of the week.
OMG. Clay Aiken? Is that you?
OMG...tell a girl when you are going to be so funny, the Diet Coke came out the nose! SEEKING A KEYBOARDING TEACHER.NET, they should try that one.
OK, I am off of here, I officially have no life other than the blog. Sad, or good??
Good!! Have a great night, ya'll!
WOW!
I think Katie will be great on Broadway
