Katie Holmes & Tom Cruise / WireImage
Haven't we heard this before? Indie actress marries Tom Cruise. Beautiful actress rumored to have signed contract as part of arrangement in marrying Tom Cruise (I said "rumored", calm down). The new Mrs. Cruise chooses film roles carefully (with help of hubby - question mark). Aforementioned actress/wife takes on high profile legit theater role to jump start legit movie career and makes a big splash. Oh, yes - we have heard this before. Can you say "Nicole Kidman in The Blue Room"? Well it is déjà vu time. The rumor is that Katie Holmes is set to make her Broadway debut, following in the well-tread footsteps of Mr. Tom Cruise's previous wife. What will the results be for her?
The word on 42nd Street is that Katie Holmes has been offered a leading role in the Broadway revival of Arthur Miller's classic play All My Sons. I understand that this is definitely more than a rumor, that she has been mulling the offer very seriously for several weeks now and is prepared to accept any day. The new production would join Holmes with John Lithgow (The World According to Garp) and Dianne Wiest (currently starring in CSC's The Seagull).
Set in 1947, the play tells the story of a family torn apart when a son discovers that his father sold defective parts to the military for airplanes, which caused the planes to crash and kill 21 pilots. Katie Holmes is set to play the role of Ann Deever, the young bride of the son and the daughter of the business partner that took the blame and landed him in jail. British director Simon McBurney will helm the project.
IMHO (in my humble opinion) I think Ms. Holmes will do a great job. Maybe I am eternal optimist (or maybe I am scared of the wrath of Tom Cruise), but I think she has "chops" - I think she can act. I am a fan of hers from movies and film and would really like to see her succeed here. It is risky for her to jump straight to The Broadway (her last stage role was reportedly in high school). It might have been smarter for her to start in London and transfer (like Kidman did with The Blue Room). However, she is well suited for the role, she has a rockin' cast to work with and a very strong director. It is a smart choice for her and she may do very well here.
I do worry that the rialto will become a big CIRCUS. Can you imagine the "paps" camping out in Shubert Alley trying to get a pix of Holmes and baby Suri? The reporters skulking around the stage door for a word with Cruise. The crowds gathered around the entrance to the Church of Scientology building on 45th Street awaiting the arrival of Family Cruise (did you think I was going to do this post without one scientology reference - come on). I worry about all that, but I think it is a side show that we can put up with because this will bring a TON of exposure to The Broadway - which is always great.
SIDE NOTE: I actually played the role of George Deever (the young angry brother of Ann who exposes the deadly family secret) in a college production of All My Sons. I was nothing short of riveting. Ms. Holmes, if you are reading this, I may be willing to come out of retirement to reprise my role. I'm just saying....
We will keep you posted with the updates on this story and if it happens, most likely, blog about it incessantly! Until then, I will...

Yes, haven't we all seen this before about the "controlling" one, ie' (in this case Cruise) with his "women." So GLAD Nicole broke free from his insidious "it's ALL about me" behavior !! So GLAD to see her happy. As for "Kat, Kat, Kateee," you MUST notice that she doesn't smile her "giggly, little girlish" smile anymore either. She's been totally "made over" no doubt by the "power (singular) that be" for fear she comes off "that" way to the public. You must grow up now little girl. Granted, she always has been beautiful, but one can't help but think this "controlling freak" is simply trying to create yet another robot !!
blackdotnose, be careful...the power of Xenu is all around you. This internet isn't secure. I wouldn't make any calls on your cell either if I were you. Honestly the more publicity for The Broadway, the better. She has done some good things before, but I have a feeling this is a whole other world. Katie, you maam, are no Nicole Kidman. Sidenote: Love the bangs, even got them myself:)
It should be reflected here that these sites are just for fun and opinions. So any sort of threat or threats made to other persons inside of these sites should be reported. NOONE needs from ANYONE any kind of "curse or curses" thrown at them randomly for a mere OPINION !! People need to GET some manners !!
Wow... I was totally kidding. I am a God-fearing Catholic, so that was totally just fun for me. My apologies.
blackdotnose - i think that was a joke about scientologists, not a threat - haven't you heard all the rumors about them? They are considered to be pretty scary, from what I gather. Anyhow, I just hope if she takes the job that there aren't any car accidents on the way to the theater - as "only scientologists can really help" she would be obligated to stop and then the show would be delayed and then the audience would start to get edgy and - yes! - hungry! Anarchy would result as angry, hungry theatergoers would begin shaking each other down for some certs or the odd tic tac. I think this should be thought through vereeeee carefullly...
maybe she should try being a mom.
everyone knows the extensive hours involved in doing a play, day and night and into the morning.
can you imagine your mom acting in a broadway play instead of raising you?
how sad.
gdl1918, I totally knew you would be there for me. May my God and Katies Go--er, husband watch over you today. The only curse I know I have is my devastatingly perfect cheekbones:) Thank Goodness we don't have many car accidents in my neck of the woods, we are jam-packed with Lutherans and Methodists. Who will save us?
Also, I agree, how on earth do you have kids and do a play? It would have to be a very limited engagement or just a flock of nannies and Scientologist BFFS.
Wait. This is crazy. Being a working mom on stage is the same as being a working mom in the classroom, the corporate world or the drugstore down the street. Once you get through rehearsals the hours are almost even better because you only have to work a few hours at night and can spend the day with your child. Don't berrate her for being a working mother -- her job has a lot of flexibility. There are a lot of other jobs in the theatre that aren't so flexible... At least she isn't going "on location" to a foreign country for 180 days...she will see her child. Jeez -- I also think she will kick butt in this role!
gdl918...you're probably right, (about the scientologists) they are pretty scary. More and more Hollywood couples seem to be joining the "ranks" as it were. But that's their gig.
AHmom...thanks, I'm just really leary of stuff like that AND that whole Scientology thing. :)
Hurrah! And there was peace in the land.....you know, blackdotnose, if you remain a committed fan and commenter (and some of us SHOULD be committed) you will earn yourself a place in the groundbreaking musical Broadway Bixby's Comments Section!
