ONE TOUGH MOTHER IS COMING TO BROADWAY - Direct from an acclaimed, sold-out run at Chicago's renowned Steppenwolf Theatre. Written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Tracy Letts (author of the runaway hits Bug and Killer Joe), this grand, gripping new play tells the story of the Westons, a large extended clan that comes together at their rural Oklahoma homestead when the alcoholic patriarch disappears. Forced to confront unspoken truths and astonishing secrets, the family must also contend with matriarch Violet, a pill-popping, deeply unsettled woman at the center of this storm.

Featuring 13 actors and directed by Anna D. Shapiro, the play earned astonishing raves during its recent Chicago premiere. The New York Times hailed it as "hugely entertaining a ripsnorter full of blistering, funny dialogue, acid-etched characterizations and scenes of no-holds-barred emotional combat." And the Chicago Tribune cheered, "Like 'Long Day's Journey Into Night' shoved into a blender with Quentin Tarantino and Lillian Hellman a major, not-to-be-missed new American work."

What the Critics are Saying

  • New York Times
"It is, flat-out, no asterisks and without qualifications, the most exciting new American play Broadway has seen in years."
  • New York Daily News
    "Letts' perspective is bracingly fresh."
  • Variety
"Ferociously entertaining "August: Osage County," the American dysfunctional family drama comes roaring into the 21st century with eyes blazing, nostrils flaring and fangs bared, laced with corrosive humor so darkly delicious and ghastly that you're squirming in your seat even as you're doubled over laughing."
